Mgahinga
LIMITED EDITION
There is nothing like locking eyes with a wild mountain gorilla and feeling what can only be described as a human connection.
Laying on my belly, holding my breath, and trying to stay focused while silently releasing the shutter 10ft from these unbelievable creatures was not an easy task. Very few times I have had to move my eye away from the viewfinder to take a deep breath, and this was definitely one of them. It's hard to control your emotions when these animals make eye contact with you. You know it's not a threatening gaze, but that's exactly how it feels. Their way of looking is so intense, you feel the need to avert your eyes for a few seconds, just to feel a bit safer. You look down, you double check your camera settings, and you slowly turn your eyes back to this magnificent animal, just to realise he hasn't lost sight of you. Not for a second. It's scary and it's intimidating, but above all, it is a life-changing experience for your comprehension of animal intelligence.
For this image, I laid down and waited in order to get in a position where the sun rays lit only the lower part of the face, which made capturing this image even more interesting - 2018
