The natural colors of these hills from the Death Valley, CA are from volcanic deposits rich in iron oxides and chlorite, which create a rainbow effect.
The idea behind this image was to compress the scene as much as possible using a telephoto lens, in order to achieve a two-dimensional effect, which therefore resembled a flat color palette. A random subject hiked all the way up the hill and happened to stand perfectly in this frame to snap this shot :)
